Pay-as-you-go kölbi roaming costs ₡52 per outgoing minute and ₡0.012 per KB in 18 countries in the Americas. It doesn’t cover all of the Americas: Belize, Bolivia, Venezuela, French Guiana, and the Caribbean fall outside that rate. If you have postpaid service on an Ultra k or k plus plan, there are data packages at a promotional price.

How Much Does Kölbi Roaming Cost in the Americas?
These are the prices as of November 2026, taxes included:
| Option | Price | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-as-you-go, in the 18 countries | ₡52 per outgoing minute; ₡0.012 per KB, about ₡12 per MB | Postpaid, prepaid, and Dominio k |

If you have postpaid service with roaming turned on, your plan may also include data: up to 2 GB on k2 plus, up to 3 GB on k3 plus, and up to 6 GB on Ilimitado, depending on how much of your local plan you’ve used.
The promotional price for the Americas packages runs from June 11 to December 7, 2026. At those prices, 1 GB in a package costs far less than 1 GB pay-as-you-go, which works out to the regular price of ₡12,582.91.
The Countries Where Kölbi Roaming Applies
The 18 countries are the United States, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Uruguay, Peru, and Suriname.

In Belize, Bolivia, Venezuela, and the Caribbean, the regular price of $0.007 per KB applies. In Belize, Bolivia, and Venezuela, outgoing minutes are also billed at the regular price in dollars.
For Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, there are the Viajero roaming data packages, only for postpaid Ultra k and k plus: 1 GB for 1 day at ₡6,000, 5 GB for 7 days at ₡30,000, and 10 GB for 14 days at ₡60,000, discounted from July 20, 2026, to January 19, 2027. Check that your country is on the Viajero list. If you use kölbi roaming in Europe without a package, that country’s pay-as-you-go rate applies.
Layovers count too: if you have a package and connect through a country that isn’t on the list, that usage is billed pay-as-you-go, up to the initial $50 limit. So when you compare flights, it’s worth looking at where the route goes.
How to Activate Kölbi Roaming
If you want to turn on roaming, you can do it from the kölbi app, in the mi kölbi online store, or by dialing *888# and pressing the call key, then option 4, kölbi Roaming. You can also do it at a kölbi store or an ICE office.
If you’re already outside Costa Rica, activate it from the app or the mi kölbi online store, preferably on Wi-Fi to avoid unexpected usage. To turn it off, dial *888#, option 4, then option 2; you’ll get a confirmation SMS. If you turn off roaming, you lose your active package with no refund. If you run into problems, call 1193 from Costa Rica or +506 88881193 from abroad.

This menu screenshot is from 2022 and shows kölbi Roaming as option 5. Today kölbi lists it as option 4, so follow what you see on your phone.
How to Avoid a High Roaming Bill
Also, if you’re on postpaid, the initial data limit is $50, and you can change it to 50, 80, 100, 200, 400, or 800 USD, before taxes and fees. If you use less than the agreed amount, you pay only for what you used. Keep in mind that calls and SMS have no cap, and that incoming calls and outgoing SMS are also charged, so it’s a good idea to check your destination’s rate with kölbi.
Usage goes on your bill if you’re on postpaid. If you’re on prepaid, it comes out of your main balance, not your special balances. As for packages, each one starts running when you activate it and can’t be paused, you can have only one active at a time, and it doesn’t renew on its own.
Turn off data roaming on your phone when you aren’t using it, to avoid automatic downloads. Once you activate the service, you can check your usage in the app or by dialing *888#.
For other regions, you can go to kölbi.cr and look up the price for each destination, or call 1193 before you travel.
