Mexican airline Viva has announced a new international route linking Monterrey, Nuevo León, with Costa Rica, giving passengers a direct, affordable, and comfortable way to travel between the two destinations.
The new route starts on October 30, out of Juan Santamaría International Airport, with two flights a week:
- Monterrey to San José: Mondays and Fridays, departing at 9:50 p.m. and arriving at 1:20 a.m. (the next day).
- San José to Monterrey: Tuesdays and Saturdays, departing at 2:20 a.m. and arriving at 6:00 a.m.
The service will initially run through January 12, then return on March 28 for the start of the Holy Week vacation season, and from that date on it will operate year-round.

For now, that would make Viva the only airline flying direct from Monterrey to Costa Rica, and the first to do so.
“We’re excited to welcome more visitors from northern Mexico and to bring Costa Ricans closer to a vibrant region full of opportunities,” said Tourism Minister William Rodríguez.
Viva, for its part, keeps expanding its route network from Monterrey, its main base, to connect more and more key destinations across Latin America.
According to the latest figures from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, 36,211 Mexican tourists arrived in Costa Rica by air during the first five months of 2025 (January through May).
Viva flights from Costa Rica to Monterrey are already available on the airline’s official website.
