Starting May 28, US airline Southwest is ending its perk of two free checked bags per passenger on its flights and changing its baggage policy for new travelers.
The company will now charge $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second.
The move follows in the footsteps of airlines like United, Delta, and American Airlines, which already charge for them.
Southwest has confirmed that anyone who bought their flights before that date will keep the perk.
It’s worth pointing out that passengers with elite status (A-List Preferred) in its loyalty program are the only ones who will keep the perk.

Southwest also announced that travelers with A-List status in the loyalty program will be entitled to one free bag as well.
Meanwhile, travelers who hold a co-branded credit card with the airline will also be able to check one standard bag at no cost.
Keep in mind that if you buy Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus, or Anytime fares, you’ll have to pay for checked bags.
Southwest’s policy change also comes with a change in fares: the one known as “Wanna Get Away” is becoming “Basic,” which won’t allow changes or advance seat selection. These passengers will sit at the back of the plane, and if a ticket is canceled, the passenger will receive a flight credit that expires in six months.
Southwest also plans to eliminate its open seating policy, under which passengers chose their spot when boarding. Starting in 2026, it will introduce an assigned seating system and offer premium options with more room.
