Juan Santamaría Airport Opens Charging Zones Just for Electric Taxis

Thanks to a public-private partnership, Juan Santamaría International Airport has rolled out a total of 6 chargers exclusively for electric taxis.

The project cost $30,000, with the money provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

It’s worth noting that these charging zones are for taxi drivers only, and the general public won’t be able to use them.

Installing these electric taxi chargers at Juan Santamaría Airport is a pilot program by the institutions involved.

The program will last 1 year, and the data it gathers will be analyzed to support decisions on rolling out electric public transportation on a large scale.

Besides the chargers, the 6 electric vehicles now available are also an investment by a public-private partnership.

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute will handle operations and keep the charging service running, and the units have a maximum output of 11.5 kW.

The program aims to make it easier to operate the fleet ahead of future expansions of Costa Rica’s electric infrastructure.

The project was developed by the CRUSA Foundation, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), in collaboration with AERIS (the airport’s operator) and the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).
