The US government announced that all student visa applicants and exchange visitors in the F, M, and J nonimmigrant classifications must make their social media profiles public.
According to the press release, this is meant to make it easier to vet all applicants for this type of nonimmigrant visa to the US.
The measure aims to uphold the highest standards of national security and public safety in the visa process.

The US Department of State said it will soon resume scheduling student visa applications in the F, M, and J nonimmigrant categories.
Applicants should check the website of the relevant embassy or consulate for appointment availability.
The press release also reminded applicants that “a US visa is a privilege, not a right,” which is why the government seeks to protect the country.
It added that officials “must remain vigilant during the visa issuance process to ensure that those applying for admission to the United States do not intend to harm Americans.”
The announcement comes after President Trump’s administration paused all student visa appointments because it lacked the means to review applicants’ social media.
