Avianca has changed its fare families and eliminated the option of traveling with just a carry-on and a personal item.
In other words, the cheapest fare now includes only a free personal item, and the next fare up automatically includes a carry-on and a checked bag.
The change, in place since February 1, has upset travelers, who say it now costs a lot more to pay for the extra carry-on, since the lowest fare has gone up.
According to the airline, “it’s a new option so travelers can choose how they fly.”

Carry-on bags are something that has varied across Avianca’s fare families over the years.
It’s worth noting that the airline now falls within the low-cost carrier segment, according to information confirmed by Avianca representatives.
Now, for flights within the Americas, excluding Brazil, there will be three fares available in economy class: basic, classic, and flex.
There’s also one in business class: business, which can only be purchased on routes within the Americas operated on twin-aisle aircraft.
The XS, S, M, L, and XXL fare structure has been eliminated, and the airline will now use only these new fares.
