Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) has installed its first scanner that doesn’t require travelers to take liquids, gels, or electronics (like computers or tablets) out of their bags.
This type of scanner is already in use at airports around the world, and the goal of Aeris, the airport’s operator, is to speed up security inside the terminal.
With this new setup, airport authorities are expected to be able to screen 110 to 130 people per hour.
In other words, with this scanner you’ll no longer need to put liquids or gels of up to 100 ml in a clear bag for inspection, or take them out of your luggage.

The new scanner at Juan Santamaría also has an automated tray system that improves efficiency and the experience at security checkpoints.
It’s worth pointing out that the old scanners are still in operation; this is just one new security lane with the technology.
This advanced screening equipment gets you through the checkpoint faster because it uses specialized algorithms to identify items automatically.
On top of this, a $62.2 million investment was announced to expand the terminal, which will have four levels with a new baggage handling system, a larger customs area, and a new self bag drop space, among other areas.
Also, in 2027 the new MOXY hotel, part of the Marriott chain, will open inside the terminal, the region’s first “on-airport hotel.”
